Grant Gee grew up in Plymouth on the picturesque south coast of England. After attending college in Oxford Grant moved to London in the early 90’s, initially working as a delivery-man for a well known chain of off-licences. His interest in filming was sparked when he had to deliver beer to editing suites in London’s Soho. He soon became a runner for the Online Suite.
Having never been to film school, his style is entirely self-taught, his skills lying in his quick thinking and intuitive approach to filming. Grant started by messing around with Super 8 and Bolex film cameras, learning as he went along. His knowledge of filming and lighting techniques has proved invaluable in his directing career.
His break into directing came with a commission for a low budget video for Tom Waits, from there he worked as a second unit director for various different promos. In between all this Grant was employed as a researcher for U2 Zoo TV and from here he was commissioned to work on Zoo Radio, which earned him a Sony radio award.
Through hard work, bags of talent and word of mouth Grant was commissioned to direct the Radiohead ‘No Surprises’ promo, the band enjoyed working with Grant so much that he was then asked to follow them around on their world tour in 1997. The resulting multi-award nominated documentary ‘Meeting People is Easy’ openly shows a band in the throws of trying to cope with sudden international acclaim and commercial success. Grant then joined Hammer and Tongs and worked with the likes of Coldplay, The Auteurs, Les Innocents and Blur.
Grant’s passion for music and musicians is evident in the wide variety of acts he has worked with. Some standout pieces in his repertoire include Spooky ‘Found Sound’, Radiohead ‘No Surprises’, and more recently for Oil Factory, Badly Drawn Boy ‘Another Pearl’ Idlewild ‘Roseability’, and Stephen Malkmus ‘Discretion Grove’.
